Ring in the Holiday Season

by Barbara Pash Audiences clap. They cry. They sing along. The reaction to Westminster Ringers repertoire, everything from religious and classical to pop tunes, is beyond enthusiastic. “We believe our music should move you,” said Larry Henning, who, with his wife, Debbie Henning, in 1997, founded and co-directs Westminster Ringers, a non-profit community handbell group. “It’s a wonderful experience for the audience and the players.” The Hennings, Westminster residents and the parents of three, are long-time handbell players. Debbie, director of music at Gettysburg United Methodist Church, has been playing since childhood. Larry, a seventh grade teacher at Mount...

Bring on the Bling

by James Rada, Jr.  photography by Bill Ryan With the holidays approaching, you can’t go wrong giving jewelry as a gift. In Carroll County, you don’t have to settle for jewelry that shines but doesn’t have a lot of personality. You can find affordable, fine jewelry in locally owned stores. Toni Pomeroy, owner of Pomeroy’s Jewelers in Westminster, started working in a chain jewelry store when she was 17 and right out of high school. “I love connecting with my customers,” Pomeroy said. “Some of them have become really close friends.” This seems to be something that all of...

A Spot for Dogs

by Anne Blue  photography by Phil Grout Like kids let out for recess, a trio of dogs chase each other around the open floor of The Maryland Dog Spot, happy to play in the vast indoor space that provides plenty of room to stretch their legs. Pearl, a long black-haired English shepherd, deftly weaves around the two bigger dogs, trying to herd them around the room. The largest dog, a lean black and white English pointer named Zwei, leads the trio’s romp. Poppy, a young Chesapeake Bay retriever, takes her cues from the older dogs and appears thrilled just...

Hair or Bare

Body hair fashion trends range from no hair below to the au naturel by Jeffrey B. Roth Hair today, gone tomorrow — so goes the body hair-removal debate for both men and women. “Dare to be bare” is the motto for bare Skin Care & Laser Center, with locations in Westminster and Hanover, Pa. “No one wants hair — no hair anywhere on the body, except on the head, and with men, sometimes on the face,” said owner Theresa Haggerty. “We do not wax. We do permanent Laser Hair Removal for every man and every woman wherever they have hair they want removed as long as it’s darker than a blonde shade.” Haggerty’s clients range in age from 16 to 65. For both men and women, LHR provides freedom from shaving, she said. Treatment times vary in length from two minutes for an upper lip to one to two hours for legs. On average, achieving an 80 percent permanent hair reduction takes six sessions spaced four to six weeks apart. A trained medical aesthetician, Haggerty employs a Vairiable Pulsed Light system for LHR services. VPL is a safe and non-invasive procedure which utilizes light energy to remove hair and to treat skin imperfections. While some clients experience mild discomfort during treatment, contrary to misconceptions, LHR is not super painful, she said. Haggerty also provides a variety of aesthetic treatments,...
