Dawn DeMario started her career as a hair stylist over 30 years ago. With the strong desire to invest in others, Dawn opened her first salon company in 2000 with her husband cheering her on. In 2010, Dawn launched her second small business, LUX Boutique. Now employing over 35 women in Carroll County, her desire to be a great leader comes from her core beliefs and her strong desire to want everyone on her team to succeed. Being a mom to four daughters drives her to be the best every day, and show them how to be passionate and successful in business.

Do you believe that women in business can have it all?
I cherish my family and love my career. I believe that the same characteristics are important in each – purpose, passion, value, opportunities, achievement, fulfillment, happiness, meaning, support, harmony, balance and challenge. In my husband and the people I am privileged to work with, I get to share, help and have an influence. Love what you do, love who you do it with – I think that’s impactful!

What is the best advice anyone has given you, and how did it change your life?
Early in my career I received the best advice from industry icon, Sam Villa, when I was 20 years old. He asked me if I wanted to know the secret to success. He said it is ‘communication’. It sounded so simple at the time, but every day I try to be a better communicator, to remove emotions from decisions and to remember to tell the incredible people in my life how important and special they are to me. It turns out ‘communication’ is hard work. But, at the end of the day, when people are flourishing…no one is surprised!

What do you hope to achieve in the next five years?
I want to make a difference through giving, sharing, leadership and education. I would like to leave a legacy. Winston Churchill said, “You make a living by what you get, you make a life by what you give.” Legacy is about mentoring and sharing. I want to make a difference to individuals and also the industry that has been so good to me throughout my 30-year career. I’ve always wanted to write a book about makeovers. Not just the typical makeover but to really look into the human soul and spirit and how powerful the touch of a hair designer is.
