Masterworks Chorale of Carroll County Spring Concert

The Masterworks Chorale of Carroll County presents “Israel in Egypt” by G.H. Handel under the direction of artistic director Michael Holmes. Accompanied by the Baltimore Baroque Band of Peabody Conservatory, playing on period instruments.

Handel is best known for his Oratorio, “Messiah,” often heard at Christmastime. This Oratorio was written to be performed in the spring, just before Easter. It tells the story of the enslaved people of Israel who are led to freedom across the Red Sea. The music is evocative with passages bringing images of leaping frogs, buzzing flies and locusts, darkness, and the swell of the waters overwhelming the hosts of Egypt. But there is a deeper message of hope for deliverance from oppression, prejudice, and misused power. The divine power not only conquers, but is celebrated by those who see beyond themselves to the power of community and of faith.

Soloists from the Chorale are featured in several selections.

Tickets are $20. Free for ages 12 and under.

The Chorale is in its 45th year and boasts a current membership of over 40 voices. New members are always welcome. The Masterworks Chorale of Carroll County, known formerly as the Carroll County Choral Arts Society, was founded in 1977 under the direction of conductor David Kreider. Since its founding, the group has brought the community the works of historical masters such as Mozart, Brahms, Haydn, Handel, and Mendelssohn, as well as many contemporary composers. Masterworks Chorale is dedicated to providing the community with the opportunity to hear music of the highest quality and to participate in making that music. It is a nonprofit organization that depends on the support of the individuals, businesses, institutions, and organizations in the community.
