Last year’s Antiques Appraisal Day turned up an 1898 “big wheel” bicycle that had been in Chris Heyn’s Westminster family for several generations.
The vehicle, a safer successor to the Victorian “breakbone” cycle, was appraised by the experts at $48,000.
Another object, a 19th century German wax figure encased in a glass dome, was assessed at $1,000.
So you never know what valuable items are lurking in your attic or basement.
If you think you might have something worth money, or just want to know what you have, bring it to this year’s ninth annual Antiques Appraisal Day on Saturday, September 13 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the American Legion Hall, Carroll Post, 2 Sycamore Street, Westminster.
This year, according to Robert Harrison of Westminster, the chairman of the event, the organizers are expecting about 200 hopefuls. Anyone can bring items, except firearms, and have them appraised. Cost of appraisal is $20 for the first piece and $5 each for two additional pieces (three is the limit). Food and drink will be available.
Five professional, accredited appraisers, including Harrison, will be on hand to check out heirlooms, collectibles, coins and objets d’art. The other four are James Callear of Barnesville, Barry Hagen of New Market, Joel Litzky of Severna Park and Fred J. Winer of Towson.
Sponsors of Antiques Appraisal Day are: Gold – New Windsor State Bank, WTTR Radio, Herman Construction, Lehigh Cement, BB&T; Silver – Carroll Lutheran Village, Carroll Community College, Provident Bank, Access Carroll, Mills’ Communications and Mel and Linda Mills. Proceeds from the event benefit the Historical Society of Carroll County.
