The family of one of Westminster’s most distinguished citizens has donated $50,000 for community improvement.
In ceremonies at the sixth annual Fallfest Gala on April 12 at Martin’s Westminster that kicked off the Fallfest “Paving the Road to a Better Community” campaign, Evelyn and Caroline Babylon, representing the family of the late Westminster Common Council president, David S. Babylon, Jr., pledged the money in his memory.
The donation was intended to jump-start a capital campaign to replace the Westminster Municipal Playground concession stand with a new two-story multipurpose community building.
The Babylons presented the check in front of a sellout crowd that attended this year’s event, and organizers expect the gala to net approximately $10,000.
“At one of our last family vacations, we sang the blessing and filled our plates and the family sat around the table,” said Evelyn Babylon. “David was at one end of the table and I was at the other. He looked at me and said ÔLook at what we started.’ He was so proud”
Charities slated to benefit from Fallfest 2008 include Carroll Hospice, the Historical Society of Carroll County, Kiwanis Clubs of Westminster and Rape Crisis Intervention Services.
In addition to dinner, dancing (to music by the Majestics) and live and silent auction fare, attendees’ names were placed into a drawing for cash prizes and the opportunity to grab cash in a money booth.
