Rain poured on and off throughout the day, but nothing dampened the spirits at the First Annual Boles Bash at Westminster City Park on June 20.
From 2 p.m. until 8 p.m., 15 bands performed on stages using a sound system that rivaled some of the best concert settings. Attendees danced, ate pit beef, twirled hula hoops, enjoyed Hoffman’s ice cream, and celebrated the lives of Matthew and Caitlin Boles, Westminster High School students who died in a car accident last fall.
“It is healing for us to do this,” said Michelle Boles, the teens’ mother.
“After their deaths, we wanted to honor their lives so we set up a foundation in their names,” said their father, Pat Boles. “We raised money, and this year we gave out six scholarships of $1,000 each.”
The scholarships mirror the children’s interests. This year’s recipients included: Bryan Vana (skater scholarship); Katie Walsh (student leadership); Corinne Thompson (graphic design); Robert Salm (culinary arts); and Mitch Fultz (Latter Day Saints Church School); Natalie Boles (organ donation).
Dawn Ritt, who survived liver cancer because Caitlin Boles was an organ donor, was an honored guest at Saturday’s celebration.

Art in the Park
An estimated 2,500 people strolled the grounds behind Westminster City Hall on June 6, soaking in the sights, sounds, and tastes and smells linked to the local arts council’s annual Art in the Park. This year’s festivities featured the works of 75 artists and artisans in a variety of mediums. Attendees also enjoyed live musical performances throughout the park, artists’ demonstrations, a craft tent filled with activities for youngsters and specialty and traditional food and beverages.
