The Fourth Annual Hair Ball drew approximately 300 people on October 18 to Martin’s Westminster, where ticket sales, corporate sponsorships and a silent auction raised $46,000 for the Stacey Davis Breast Cancer Fund, according to Dawn DeMario, the key organizer of the event.
Last year, the fund gave $36,500 to local women who needed financial assistance to wage their personal battles against cancer. The fund was established in honor of Stacey Lynn Davis who died in 2002 after her own courageous battle with the disease.
Several women who received money from the fund attended the gala, including Barbara Geier, a 70-year-old retiree who lives in Westminster with her daughter Kelly Green.
“My only source of income is social security. I drive a 1998 Dodge Dakota and I had a pile of bills,” Geier said. “The $2,000 I received was such a blessing. I still have my car and I’m enjoying time with my two children and my four grandchildren.”
The Hair Ball, named because DeMario is a hairdresser, has a reputation for bringing together an eclectic group of people. People gather each year because, as attendee Brenda Fisher said, “many of us love what this fund raiser represents: hope for many women in Carroll County.”

Glitzy 49th Silvery Moon Ball Raises $100,000 for Hospital
In front of an audience of more than 400 people at the Silvery Moon Ball, members of the Carroll Hospital Center Auxiliary donated $100,000 to go toward renovation and technological update of hospital’s operating room.
The donation marked the culmination of a fundraising drive that ended November 1, 2008, with the ball, a black-tie tradition that began 49 years ago.
“We like the camaraderie and seeing people in a completely different environment,” said Dr. Jason W. Hammond, who attended the event with his wife, Camille Hammond. “It’s also great that this is all for such a worthy cause.”
In keeping with this year’s theme, “Puttin’ on the Ritz – A Night of Glamour and Glitz,” guests walked down a red carpet that rolled from the entrance to the main hall of Martin’s of Westminster. The evening included auctions that featured fine jewelry and a week in the Hamptons with $1,000 cash.
Guests could also buy $100 chance at the Champagne Pyramid, sponsored by Garrick Jewelers and Bob and Janice Kirkner. The pyramid, made up of 99 glasses, 98 of which held one-carat cubic zirconiums. One glass held a one-carat diamond. With the purchase of Number 84, Pat Wolf, who attended the ball with her husband Hoby, won the diamond.
Trish Wagman chaired the Silvery Moon Ball Committee this year, and Kelly Hill served as the auction chair. Other committee members who started working on the event in February, 2008, included: Teresa Asher, Lori Blake, Norma Brown, Vicky Campbell Green, Dina Canapp, Dottie Cole, Michele DiGate, Ellen Finnerty Myers, Teresa Fletcher, Babara Gunther, Janice Hobart, Helen Hosfeld, Sherry Kalish, Colleen McNally, Sharon Quinter, Mary Richards, Dena Rooney, Kim Ruby, Dolly Snyder, Tina Warehime, and Mark Wisniewski.
