family gatherings

Each year, the Carroll Magazine December/January issue ushers in
one of my favorite seasons and offers some of my favorite stories.

I love Christmas because it comes with so many traditions. One of those traditions for me is journeying, kids and dogs in tow, to a farm to cut down our Christmas tree. My mom went a step further and often purchased a live tree that we’d decorate, enjoy in our house during December and plant outdoors to grow. Maybe the appeal is the smell of the fresh pine that lingers in the house, or the beauty and uniqueness of each tree, or the sweat equity invested in getting it.

I love learning about traditions that bring others joy as well. In this issue, you will read about challah bread (page 74) and the meaning that comes with every aspect of the baked treat, from the ingredients to the shape to the history. Inspired by this article, I plan to make challah bread for my Christmas table this year. I know my taste buds will appreciate the celebration of someone else’s tradition.

This end-of-year issue has some inspiration in it beyond tradition and food. Our Heart of Carroll County section shines a light on the people who make Carroll County an inviting place to call home (page 37). We feature five volunteers who give their time and energy at local nonprofits to make life better for others (page 56) and visit rescues that provide our animal friends a second chance at loving homes (page 60).

We’re also excited to honor our Person of the Year (page 14). Terry Smack was not born or raised here, but she has built a life here that includes starting a business, raising a family and giving back in significant ways. While she credits the community with supporting her, it’s clear that the community benefits greatly from having this compassionate and driven individual committed to empowering those around her.

The Carroll Magazine team wishes you a peaceful and festive holiday season. Whether you are cozying up next to your Christmas tree, cooking family recipes, or participating in other holiday traditions with friends and family, I hope that you transition into the new year with hope and excitement about what lies ahead in 2025.

Cheers!
