Mt. Airy Middle School is the first public school in Carroll County to achieve silver certification under the Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) Schools Rating System. LEED is a green building certification program that recognizes best-in-class building strategies and practices. Built in 2013, it has been identified as a showcase example of sustainable design and demonstrates leadership in transforming the building industry, according to a Carroll County Public Schools news release. LEED certified buildings are designed and built to minimize resource consumption, reduce life cycle costs, maximize health and productivity for the building’s occupants and improve environmental performance.
