The notion that one man’s trash is another man’s treasure can be aptly applied to the world of antiques and collectibles. With a visit to the Historical Society of Carroll County’s Antiques Appraisal Day on September 8, collectors can find out if they truly possess a treasure.

What is more, antique aficionados can find an abundant assortment of shops in Carroll County to sustain their collecting habit. Robert Harrison, president and owner of Harrison Appraisals LLC, has some suggestions for prospective antique hunters:

¥ Start in the antique malls, where it is easy to comparison-shop, and check out several of the same objects.
¥ Read the trade publications; Maine Antique Digest is considered the bible.
¥ Take a class; Harrison teaches “Buying and Selling Antiques” at Carroll Community College, a noncredit, 8-week course.
¥ Get out to museums and auctions where you can see the “real” item. In Carroll, the Gatehouse Museum in Sykesville, the Taneytown Museum, and the Historical Society are all good resources.
¥ In this shopping guide, shops have been grouped by geographic area, with phone numbers, hours and a brief description of the shop’s wares. Some shops are known for a specialty, while others stock a little bit of everything. Naturally, merchandise changes all the time. Also, because of the changing nature of the business, many shops supplement their antique business with other ventures, which can make shopping quite fascinating.
¥ Although this is a detailed list of stores, the very nature of this business makes a complete list almost impossible. So start with this guide, talk to proprietors, explore the country roads, and have fun. Because many of these venues are small, one-owner businesses, it is always a good idea to call and confirm store hours. Happy antiquing!
