I could say, “It’s been fun.” (You know where I’m going with this.) But that would not be precise. “Satisfying, challenging, or even exhilarating” would be closer to the truth.

Of course, I’m talking about the last 10 years that I have devoted to the editorship of Carroll Magazine. Maybe, “It’s been a privilege,” is a better description of how I feel toward the job.

The privilege is that of helping to create a publication that explores not only the life of Carroll County, but my own gut as a journalist involved with and reporting upon the personalities and phenomena of a region that exemplifies not only a part of Maryland, but that of the United States and its people.

But now the time has come to hand over the reins to someone else; in this case, our associate editor, Lisa Breslin. Yes, you guessed it. I’m retiring.

What will I do with all that spare time? In part, I will help Lisa plan and edit the forthcoming issues of Carroll Magazine. As for the rest, I will be painting in oils, writing, reading, working out at the gym and keeping up to date via the media.

Yes, the editorship has kept me busy, and at times satisfied, challenged and exhilarated; all the facets of the art and craft of working with writers, planning, editing and, at times, communicating with you, the reader, through the written word.

It has been, if not “fun,” at least satisfying in the broadest sense of the word, and I am reluctant to give it up. But there comes a time when one has to step aside in favor of the younger generation.

I hope you will give Lisa as much leeway as you have given me. Again, it’s been deeply satisfying to practice my art and craft in your service.
